To all my fellow humanitarians who care deeply about equality and dignity for all people, let us use this opportunity to rally and come together stronger than ever. Hillary’s adult life has been dedicated to fighting for the rights of all people to be treated with equality and dignity, so let us carry on with her campaign motto of “Stronger together” and continue the fight …
Trump may be the figure-head called president, but that does not mean his values or beliefs are right. We must continue to fight against the hatred, misogyny and bigotry that Trump so vocally supported throughout his campaign! Do not give up! We’ve only just begun …
Patriarchy: a system of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it.
Patriarchy is a social system in which: males hold primary power; males predominate in roles of political leadership, moral authority, social privilege and control of property; and, in the domain of the family, fathers or father-figures hold authority over women and children.
The one thing that most religions and all patriarchal cultures share is their bias against women. It is common knowledge that patriarchy has been the leading influence that has driven religions and societies to discriminate against women. Patriarchy is the root cause of young girls being forced into marriage, FGM (female genital mutilation), honor killings, marital violence and girls being denied an education because of their gender … that is why I say it is dangerous and it is morally wrong! “Culture and religion have been male; formed by men with – as we shall see – a ‘place’ for women. It does not do to patch up the past. We need revolution. Only when men can be pried free from their ancestry, can we, women and men together, begin to create something new.” ~ Daphne Hampson, After Christianity
Those words perfectly sum up the problem with trying to re-work Christianity and its biblical foundation to make it more female friendly, instead of creating something new. The Bible is sorely lacking in female role models that are based on anything other than women who are submissive to men and whose sole purpose is to bear male children, whereas biblical male role models consist of men with courage, strength, willpower and endurance, like Noah, Abraham, Moses, and King David abound. Examples in the Bible that women are suppose to look up to include prostitutes like Rahab, or women like Sarah, Ruth, Rebecca or Mary, all made famous because of the sons they bore … this is not the case with men. These women and many more in Scripture are elevated to a high status by men based on the patriarchal standards of the submissiveness and bearing male offspring. Women need female role models that edify and encourage them to live up to their full potential, which goes far beyond just fulfilling a biological purpose of reproduction. Being a feminist means that you believe in gender equality. It is long past time for every man and woman to step forward and speak up for equal rights, as Emma Watson says, “If not you, then who and if not now, then when?”. Each of us can make a difference.
Below is a portion of a comment I received the other day on a blog article I wrote, titled Women: Disrespected and Dishonored in the Bible. One line from her comment jumped out at me and I chose to use it as the title of this article, because it describes so well the role women play in the Bible … that of submitting to the man and being used as an instrument for his happiness.
“Women are disrespected in the bible. It is dishonest and quite a spin to claim otherwise. How many men want to line up and submit to their wives? How many husbands want to have to always surrender their wants, wishes and desires to those of their wife? How many men want to be told that their wife has the right to control every single aspect of their life? How many men want to be told they must obey their wife and to do otherwise is to sin. I don’t think too many men would volunteer for that. However, since God created us I guess He can decide which vessels are for honor and which are for dishonor and obviously the women is the vessel for dishonor. God made us and that is His right. You can deny this but you are not being honest. It would be better to just admit it and then work on how to make it as painless as possible for women. Obviously men are God’s favorites and everything He did is intended to help them achieve happiness. Women are merely instruments for men’s happiness and if they want to go to heaven they must accept their lowly position.”
I am saddened that a woman, who sees so clearly the male-bias of the Bible, has chosen to resign herself to the fact that it must be true. I know this is the case for countless women who have been indoctrinated from the teachings of the Bible, into thinking that they must take the submissive role in male/female relationships. For many years I too was a firm believer in the teachings of the Bible as the word of god, but my eyes were finally opened when I began to look deeply into the strong biases against women that are found throughout the Old and New Testaments. Verses such as the one below epitomize the role of women in fulfilling the desires of men. Read the rest of this entry »
From where is our right to marry given? Many Christians would say that the right to marry is given from their god and it only includes that which takes place between a man and a woman. If we stop for a moment and look at the origins of biblical marriage, one finds that it could include one man and hundreds of women. Only in the New Testament portion of the Bible, is marriage for a clergyman defined as being a man with one woman. Marriage is an institution made up by people coming from different cultures and as such encompasses many different rituals and beliefs; consequently no one should have exclusive rites to what defines a marriage.
Contained within our own Declaration of Independence is the phrase “All men are created equal and endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”, those words in and of themselves guarantee each individual the right to pursue happiness, and part of being happy is being with the one you love. Just because the norm for marriage is men and women does not mean is should be exclusively so. Every human has the right to well-being and having a life partner is part of a person’s well-being. It is long past time for the citizens of this country to stand up for the rights written into what defines our country as a land of religious freedom. Just as people of different faiths are granted the right to freely practice their religion, so should those of different sexual persuasions be allowed to freely choose those they wish to live with. Martin Luther ~ “If women become tired or even die that does not matter. Let them die in childbirth–that is why they are here.”
Martin Luther ~ “The word and works of God is quite clear, that women were made either to be wives or prostitutes.”
Martin Luther ~ “God created Adam master and lord of living creatures, but Eve spoilt all, when she persuaded him to set himself above God’s will.’Tis you women, with your tricks and artifices, that lead men into error.”
Martin Luther ~ “Men have broad and large chests, and small narrow hips, and more understanding than women, who have but small and narrow breasts, and broad hips, to the end they should remain at home, sit still, keep house, and bear and bring up children.”
Martin Luther ~ “No gown worse becomes a woman than the desire to be wise.” Read the rest of this entry »
Patriarchy did not begin with the Bible, but its practice was adopted and reinforced by the biblical authors. The more male centered and male identified a tribe or society becomes, the more oppressed its female population is. What happens in religious cultures that have their focus centered upon the male is that their gods take on an increasingly male identity and all traces of the feminine side slowly fade away. The ancient goddesses were revered for their life giving qualities, but as the status of men was elevated female attributes were degraded and male attributes elevated. The sperm became the life force of continuance, whereas the female was relegated to only being the fertile soil in which life grew. Read the rest of this entry »
Moral truths fall into the camp of justice, there is nothing that is considered moral that is not also just. Justice lies at the very foundation of all that is right and good. From this truth it becomes easy to classify universal “objective” morality in terms of justice. Moral truths refer to the class of morality that stands no matter what the circumstances. Justice is realized as fairness and is the outcome that exhibits equality for any given situation, if anything less than that is achieved justice has not been reached. This is why one has a very hard time of defining many biblical actions as being just according to the standard of fairness. Morality that comes from religious doctrines do not have to give reasons as to why something is moral or just they only need to posit that “God decreed it!” whereas morals that are defined by a standard of justice and fairness can give reasonable and logical arguments for their validity. In the recorded history of humankind there has never been a society where men or boys were denied an education simply because of their gender, but women and girls throughout history in patriarchal societies have not fared so well, continually struggling to gain human rights denied them by men. Women do not try and take human rights away from others as men have done to them, so why the disparity? It seems like the more power men in patriarchal societies gain the more they try and rob women of their human rights. Something is deeply wrong with men who think that they should own and control women’s bodies. It is truly a great shame upon the intelligence of men who continue to view the female gender as being inferior to their own. Some of the biggest offenders that have reinforced this erroneous thinking have been those in various religions. The founder of the Christian faith, the apostle Paul is a good example of how readily men follow these unethical and gender biased teachings without using their intelligence to condemn them. No man would ever be elected to any office today in a democratic country that held to the subjugation of women as taught by Paul in the New Testament. It is only fundamentalist religious groups that still adhere to the primitive male idea of dominating and controlling women. Those who hold to the idea of biblical authority are by default accepting all the bias, oppression and blatant sexism that the Bible promotes and supports. Jesus, Paul and all the other apostles and church leaders uncritically endorsed the laws of the Old Testament and taught compliance with the god spoken of in its pages…what does this tell us about them? What becomes very obvious is the intelligence level of men like Jesus and Paul, because for anyone to endorse the subjugation of women and deny them equal human rights reveals a serious lack of critical thinking. The mindset that is imported by default when one adheres to biblical teaching is evident in men who believe that ruler-ship over women is their god given right and that the Bible gives them the authority to rape women by saying god ordained it.
